What is Prenatal Massage?
Prenatal massage — sometimes called pregnancy massage — is a gentle, therapeutic style of bodywork designed specifically for expecting mothers. Using light to medium Swedish strokes, and lymphatic techniques, prenatal massage supports your changing body by easing muscle tension, improving circulation, and calming the nervous system.
Although it feels luxurious, prenatal massage is more than pampering. Studies show it can help reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle and join pain, and even improve labor outcomes and newborn health. Many women report sleeping better, feeling more balanced, and enjoying their pregnancies more after incorporating massage into their routine.

How We Offer Prenatal Massage at Spirit & Body Massage
Your safety and comfort guide every step of our prenatal sessions. We take care with positioning, draping, and pressure so you can completely relax.
- Side-lying Support: The safest and most comfortable position throughout pregnancy is lying on your side, supported by soft pillows. This reduces pressure on the uterus and major blood vessels, minimizes ligament strain, and allows you to breath easily. In this position, your therapist can gently work your back, hips, shoulders, and legs without stress to your body.
- Reclined Supine Position: For anterior work, our tables adjust so your head, chest, and knees are lifted — just like relaxing in a recliner at home. This prevents compression of the vena cava and helps keep maternal and fetal circulation optimal.
- Specialized Techniques: Your therapist uses slow, flowing Swedish strokes, gentle compressions, and light lymphatic work to reduce swelling an ease tension. Areas of common discomfort — lower back, hips, legs, feet, shoulders — are given extra care while avoiding sensitive pressure points

Pregnancy Massage — Frequently Asked Questions
Is prenatal massage safe during pregnancy?
Yes — when performed by a trained prenatal therapist. We use pregnancy safe positioning (side lying and reclined supine) and avoid abdominal work and certain pressure points. If you have a high risk pregnancy, we ask for provider clearance before your session.
How often should I get prenatal massage?
Frequency depends on your needs. Many clients benefit from bi weekly or monthly sessions. If you’re managing pain or high stress, weekly sessions can be very helpful. We’ll suggest a plan based on your stage of pregnancy and comfort goals.
What if I have swelling (edema) or varicose veins?
Massage with gentle lymphatic techniques can help reduce swelling and improve circulation. We avoid deep pressure over distended varicose veins and modify strokes to be safe and soothing. If you have a history of blood clots or thrombophlebitis, we will ask for medical clearance
Do I need a doctor’s note or clearance?
Most healthy pregnancies do not require a note. If you have a high risk condition (pre eclampsia, placenta previa, clotting disorder, uncontrolled hypertension, recent bleeding, or other medical concerns), we request clearance from your prenatal provider before booking.
