Relaxation/Swedish Massage

This is the most common type of massage therapy in the United States.  The therapist uses long smooth strokes, kneading and circular movement of superficial layers of muscle using massage lotion.  Swedish massage therapy can be very gentle and relaxing.  If you’ve never had a massage before, this is a good one to try first. Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.  The therapist uses slower strokes or friction techniques across the grain of the muscle.  Deep tissue massage is used for chronically tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems or recovery from injury.  People often feel sore for one to two days after deep tissue massage.

Neuromuscular and Trigger Point Therapy

Pressure is applied to trigger points in the body, or what clients often call knots, which are small, mini, localized muscle spasms.  Sometimes the points are tender and highly sensitive which might require a lighter touch.  Other times, they best respond to deep sustained pressure.  Trigger points classically refer pain to areas that might be further away.  Hence, it can take time to find the exact area the pain is originating form.  It is not unusual for low back pain to come from an active trigger point in the gluteal area, or for a headache to come from a point in the upper shoulder, known as trapezius muscle, or the SCM muscle in the neck, but when the source is found and the therapy applied, the release and pain reduction can be significant.

Connective Tissue Massage/Myofascial

It is a massage that deals with the muscle and connective tissue interconnected to every other area of the body.  During the myofascial release session, the therapist find stuck zones called restrictions and use gentle sliding pressure in the direction of the restriction to stretch the tissue and “liberate” the fascia in order to return it to a state of normalcy. The stretching of tissues and the heat provided by the therapist’s hands aid to produce a softer consistency of fascia, which support musculoskeletal system and alleviate chronic pain, headaches, and stress-related ailments

Medical Massage

Medical Massage is defined a medically necessary massage, which is prescribed by a physician.  Medical massage is generally practiced in relation to a specific goal focused on improving health of patients.  Medical massage is not general massage treatment; it is manual therapy applied to the specific area and the primary pathology of the patient chief complaint.
